London and Worcester, Simpkin, Marshall, & Co. and R. Groombridge, 1840. A good, tight, copy. Original printer's buckram boards, printed label to spine. Printed by Deighton and Co. Worcester. Two engraved plates, engraved tail-piece, subscribers' list. Small tear to spine head, a little loss to title label, mild internal foxing else very good. Author's presentation copy to a Mr Davidson Esq with a later owner's (Mr Frederick Houghton) neat ex-libris to paste-down. Jabez Allies (1787 – 1856) was an English folklorist and antiquarian. Born at Lulsley, Worcestershire, where his family had resided for generations. He was one of the earliest writers on folklore. In early youth he was deeply impressed by the lingering relics of Roman and Saxon days and by the pastoral life that characterised his native place and later in life and threw light upon vestiges of Roman occupation in his native county. Hardback.

Cairo, Al-Mokattam Printing Office, 1905. Contemporary rather rough quarter leather, buckram boards. xiii+451[iv]pp. Rubbed, inner joint cracked, paper brittle and browned. Used; Good Interesting provenance: inscribed A M Asquith, Khartoum 1906. A M ('Oc') Asquith was the third son of the British Prime Minister. He served in the Egyptian Civil Service from1906–11. The author, H F Saphir Amery, younger brother of Leo Amery and uncle of Julian Amery, was seconded for service with the Egyptian Army in 1901, and remained in Egypt till 1911, acting as Assistant Director of Intelligence and Indian Agent. Amery was a gifted linguist, with an exceptional knowledge of Eastern languages. Hardback.

Small 8vo. full green soft leather (sheep?), title to upper board, untitled spine ruled gilt. iv+162pp. Very attractively illustrated throughout with in-text woodcuts and colophons. Much rubbed at edges, upper board creased at corner, modern tape repair to inner joints, may lack front-free end-paper and half title. However complete and mainly clean. Woodcuts reprinted from early nineteenth century. This primer, was frequently reprinted by different publishers but is nevertheless scarce. The COPAC earliest listed edition (referenced by Alston) is a two-volume work published between 1779 and 1789. No author is given.

In good condition, clean and tight but mild signs of age and usage. Spine head and tail nicked, contemporary ink inscription to endpapers and occasionally within. The first owner, Alexander D. Adamson also of Madras College (see Robert Armstrong), living at 2 Howard Place, St Andrews, dated 1879, has practised his attractive copperplate inscription in a youthful hand a number of times on the endpapers. An unusual edition. Not in COPAC in this format. The 'Introduction to English Etymology' was first published in 1858.
